BREVETOXINS

These molecules are lipid-soluble cyclic polyethers with molecular weights around
900. The Brevetoxins are depolarizing substances that open sodium channels in cell
membranes and produce neurotoxic effects in animals. Brevetoxins are the focal point
for research efforts in cell physiology, neurology, pharmacology and environmental
regulatory areas.

 

OKADAIC ACID

This molecule is a lipid soluble polyether derivative of molecular weight 805. It is a
potent, cell-permeable specific inhibitor of PP-1 and PP-2, in numerous cell types.
Okadaic acid has played an important role in a wide diversity of modern scientific
research as a result of the molecule’s ability to bind to and inhibit important classes of
protein serine / threonine phosphatases.
